Hadassah (Episode 7)

                “Yes?”

                “Oh”

                “Alright. I’m on my way.”

“Uh guys, I have to go. My meeting with Mr Adrien is now,” he dropped the call, straightened his shirt, and left for Mr Adrien’s office.

“No need to knock. You know we’re expecting you,” Mr Adrien replied from inside the boardroom where he and Hadassah were waiting for Hank. Each had a bottle of water, a mug, which contained tea and a large pack of cookie and a bottle of red wine was at the centre of the table. There was a bottled water and a mug before an empty chair where Hank went to sit. His throat was dry. He was parched but didn’t have the strength to pick up the mug. He wanted to the meeting to start and end. Hadassah was smiling on her chair. She was graciously sipping her tea, and cracking the cookie in her mouth while laughing quietly. She suddenly felt bold, and had faith that her request was going to be granted.

Mr Adrien looked towards Esther, and started, “Miss Hadassah, you asked for this meeting, you said you had something to discuss about the company, and you wanted Hank in attendance. Here he is. State your case,” he leaned back on his chair with his mug in hand.

Hadassah dropped her mug, leaned forward, and her smile vanished immediately as she stared towards Hank, her eyes stayed intently on him, she looked away after some time, then she said,

“Some sets of individuals, me inclusive, were not born with a silver spoon. We couldn’t afford the luxuries of life, including getting good and quality education. Most of us are so intelligent that we ace the entrance exams into the university. However, there was no money to stay in the university. Some dropped out, others forfeited the admission, some others opted for other options like going to polytechnic. What I’m trying to point out is that why should we be punished for what we couldn’t control? Why should we be punished because of how life was unfair to us? If we could do something about the situation, we would have…”

Mr Adrien leaned forward, his eyes completely settled on Hadassah, “I don’t follow. What’s with you being punished for not being able to further your education? Who is punishing you?”

“Someone whom life was fair to. Someone who had access to the luxury of life. Someone who got the best of education in the best of universities. Someone who is Mr Hank!” Hadassah replied tersely and shot an evil look to Hank.

It dawned on him that he had approved of throwing one fourth of his employees out on the streets because of something they had no control over. Mr Adrien suddenly hit the table in fury and stood to his feet, with rage written all over him, after which he stormed out of the boardroom.

His head suddenly became heavy, his hands lost their use, and his legs ran out of blood as they were shivering. Fear was written all over his face. Hank knew that spelt trouble.

Some minutes later, he came back in, and the sight that greeted him sent a different surge of rage into his blood.

“You want to beat her?!” he roared

“Sir, no, I…” Hank tried defending himself, but Mr Adrien wasn’t ready to listen. As he went back into the room, he caught Hank trying to twist Hadassah’s arm. Meanwhile, he was trying to apologise, and make her understand that he was sorry. His hands which were stronger than hers held onto her pretty tight and while she was trying to break away, Mr Adrien walked in.

“You’ve now added assault to the list of your allegations. First, you made me feel stupid for allowing non-university graduates work here. Then you tried framing Michael. Hank’s eyes widened. He was shocked. His knees became very weak as he fell on his knees.

“What did you think? That I wouldn’t be aware? You know very well that we have CCTV all over the company. All over! I might act like I don’t care or I am oblivious of what’s going on in S & S but I tell you, I know quite a number of things.”

Just then, three officers walked in, and without a word, they whisked him away.

Mr Adrien sank in the chair closest to him. His head between his palms. He couldn’t understand how he happened to not be lucky with his employees. They either get in trouble, or almost get him in trouble. By this time, some workers had gathered outside the boardroom wondering what had transpired.

The next day, Mr Adrien had gotten over the issue and made sure to bury himself in work. He was so carried away he didn’t realize someone had been knocked on his door for a couple of minutes. The door creaked open and Hadassah peeped in, noticed her boss wasn’t paying attention to the door, and just walked in with her uncle behind her. She had to tap on his table before he looked up with documents in his hands. He lowered his eyes and wore a confused look.

“Apologies for distracting you sir,” Hadassah said cautiously as she stood at the far end of his table. He, however didn’t reply and only stared at her.

“This is Mr Michael sir. He was the one told me about Terrence and Big Ben, and also the main target of Mr Hank,”

“Hmm,” Mr Adrien expressed and relaxed his shoulders.

Hadassah looked from Mr Adrien to her uncle who was quietly seated and staring at the wall behind Mr Adrien. Then she added, “He is also my uncle sir. He’s been the one taking care of me since I lost my parents.

“Interesting,” he said and nodded. “I think I already asked that you be promoted, alongside some benefits. I believe you’re comfortable with the raise in position, right?”

“Yes, sir. I do appreciate that sir, and that’s why I’m here sir. To say thank you.”

“That’s not necessary. I believe you’ve earned the right to a promotion. If I see how well you handle your current position, you might happen to be the next Managing Director. I’m not about giving that position to just about anyone. Maybe I’ll send you on a long training so when you’re back, you take your position. Pending that time, Mrs Fisayo will take over as the acting MD.”

Both Hadassah’s and her uncle’s eyes widened at the news. She tried her best not to express her happiness with a shout and a jump; she however was letting out some funny noises and was grinning from ear to ear. Her uncle on the other hand, smiled broadly.

Mr Adrien couldn’t also stop his cheeks from expanding with a smile as he watched the joy on their faces.

                “That’s not all sir,”

“There’s more?” Mr Adrien asked, alarmed.

“it’s not exactly a problem sir,” Michael continued and smiled as if to make Mr Adrien calm.

                “Ohhh. Ok! What’s it then?”

“Sir, the letter Hank sent out is still out there, and tomorrow is the deadline sir. Some of the workers might not have a job by the evening of tomorrow. Some of them have stopped coming to work already.”

“Oh, Fisayo should work on that and make sure those who have stopped coming should return to their jobs, and for those who need to get more education because of their post should go back to school. We’ll work something out for them and make sure they’re able to get another job if at all there’s no vacancy here when they’re done.”

“I’ve never really met or heard of a more understanding and wise boss than him, since I was born.” Hadassah gave her boss a compliment after she left his office with her uncle.

“That’s what happens when you God favours you and you also decide to put all things concerning you in His hands. Remember, The King’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, and He can change it overnight. Regardless of how difficult the person seems or a situation looks, the secret is to trust God and pray, and as you put Hands in everything, you’ll see His hands in everything!” Michael said and smiled, patted her on her back and left, leaving Hadassah wondering how God had brought her this far.
