When I Had A Carryover...

Was going through a guy's status and saw this post. There were many more but I only screen grabbed one of it to use as a reference for my story. I've shared this story here before  but I didn't elaborate the story and I'm here to do justice to that.

Read: One Tiny Tot

I remember when I had a carryover in 300L. I was on the bus going back home from campus when I checked and saw 23 or 32 as the overall score. How I got home safe, only God knows but I knew I died inside because I didn't know what to do. Mama had always drummed it into my ears that I should not fail. She didn't have a carryover so I mustn't have one. It was more painful because that was an automatic extra year for me. I wasn't done with my special electives and there was no space for that in my first semester in 400L.

The only space left was where I was going to fix the course I failed. I couldn't imagine my parents paying complete fees just because of an elective. I cried that day. Went outside because I didn't want my roommate to overhear my conversation and called my mom. Sincerely, I was waiting for the insult of my life but I consoled myself with the fact that, at least, she was pre-informed.

I called her and with the way she spoke to me, I dried my tears. She said and I quote,

It is well but please don't go to any lecturer's office and allow him harass you in the name of trying to fix your carryover course. Just register it again and read well. God will help you. Don't be depressed please.

And a lot of other things and a handful of prayers went after.

I rose to life within me, and I tried to see the lecturer with a few others but I wasn't successful. I gave up after about the 4th time and decided to register it again. Sat for it, didn't fail this time but I didn't pass well either. However, the carryover was done.

Now, here's the catch. A special elective we registered for in 100L that didn't count before suddenly started counting as a whopping 4 unit! That was how I graduated with my set. God didn't put me to shame, and my fear of my parents paying school fees just for an elective was abated.

Now, my prayer point was that God should change the score because I've always heard testimonies like that but God answered me in another way .

It made me understand love from 2 angles. From my mother and from God. I'm grateful for the words my mother said to me that day because if she didn't say that to me, I would've been a depressed soul and might have done something harmful to myself but thank God for where we are today!

Words are very powerful especially when it comes from a loved one. Be careful of what you say to others. Banter here and there on social media in the name of cruise has ended the lives of some in that they commit suicide. Yes, one of the posts, specifically the person who started the thread said his dad's cousin committed suicide after he failed a course and his father spoke to him harshly. The man in question was a bright student, who failed just this once and the father said the wrong thing and that was the end of the child's life. What I usually find very painful about suicides is that the person suffered here and will still suffer eternally because the person is going to hell. You have no right to take your life because God gave it to you.

Please let's be nicer to people in words, not just actions. I saw a movie where someone lost a job because of what she posted on social media. She was lovely and lovable in person but terrible on social media. Funny thing was that she insulted the boss of the organization where she was supposed to get the job; she was the most eligible candidate for the job but after they got the details of her social media handles, she was chased out like a dog!

Amongst other Scriptures on the words of our mouth, I'll pick Colossians 4:6 and Ephesians 4:29

‭Colossians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭

“Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone." (NLT)

‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:29‬ ‭

“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them." (NLT)

Don't be a hypocrite. Don't be kind and loving in person while you're vile, mean and repulsive on social media. Be nice and kind to people in words; not just to those who know you but to strangers and netizens as well.

God bless you.

  1. May God help us to be kind with our words. You know the Bible said in
Jas.3.6 - And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
Jas.3.8 - But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
    It is well.
Help us lord to speak kind words to others.
May the words of our moyh be seasoned with grace at all time.
Thanks for sharing your experience ma.
    Glory to God.
